Why I built CMNT CARD

By Carter Sowers, Founder · LinkedIn

I came up through hospitality operations, and the first thing that world teaches you is that there's no substitute for talking directly to your people — the attendees at an event, the members of a community, the guests at a hotel or in a dining room, and the team behind all of it alike. No dashboard, no app, no amount of software makes up for an absentee operator who isn't there to listen. I believe that as strongly today as I ever have.

But even the most present operator can't be everywhere, or talk to everyone. At a live event, a fundraiser, a conference, or a packed dining room, you can shake a few hands and sample the room — and still never reach the hundreds or thousands of people whose honest reactions would actually tell you how it went. The single most useful thing a person can tell you is usually the thing they'd never say to your face, or sign their name to.

The tools I had didn't close that gap. I'd build a survey in one of the popular tools for one audience, then another for the next — separate logins, separate exports, nothing that connected. Responses trickled in, stripped of any way to follow up.

That's the real limitation of a Google Form or a SurveyMonkey survey. They can collect an anonymous response, but the conversation stops the moment it arrives. You can't ask a follow-up question. You can't say “thank you — here's what we changed.” Someone with a genuine concern has no way to talk it through while staying anonymous, so you're left guessing at what they really meant.

So I built the tool I actually wanted: one place to hear from any audience — customers, staff, attendees, donors — behind a simple link or QR code. People can stay completely anonymous and still have a real, two-way conversation with whoever's listening — questions, answers, a resolution — without ever revealing who they are. That's the one thing a form can't do, and it's what turns a pile of responses into something you can act on.

It also helps you capture and make sense of things you might never have caught otherwise. AI reads every response — including the open-ended, off-script ones a survey never thinks to ask about — and surfaces the themes and trends for you. Not another static report to dig through, but the signal pulled to the top.

There's no substitute for reading the actual words your people write, and the tool is built to put those words in front of you, not bury them behind a dashboard. But past a certain scale — a thousand event attendees, a year of customer comments, an entire staff — every operator can use help finding the signal and spotting patterns faster, so they can act on it.

Because the most valuable feedback is often the most sensitive, every commenter's identity is encrypted, and we're working toward SOC 2 certification. I built this in hospitality, but the need shows up anywhere honest feedback is high-value and hard to gather in person — a non-profit reading the room after a fundraiser, a team debriefing a board meeting, anyone running a live event. It's for any organization serious about delivering exceptional products, services, and experiences.

What a Google Form or SurveyMonkey can't do

Survey tools are great at collecting answers into a spreadsheet. But the feedback that changes how you operate needs a conversation — and it has to feel safe to give. That's the gap CMNT CARD was built to close, across every audience you need to hear from.
